Our Community Our Commitment

    In the early 1900's, night watchman were hired, being the foundation of the department.  The trustee board hired a marshal, L.E. Strait, to enforce the laws and arrest all persons driving over 12 mph within town limits.  A position he held for three years.  Clarence F. Berry, one of the states few fallen officers, was killed in the line of duty on December 12, 1921.

    Anthony (Tony) Koppy served as the town's Marshall 1922 to 1949.  In 1949 Walter (Walt) Hoeft accepted employment with the city as Police Chief and held that position until his retirement in 1970.  Harold Haux began his career in Leola in 1956 but took the position of Police Chief on May 1, 1962.  Chief Haux served for many years, retiring in 1996.  John Grabowska starting working with the department as an officer in 1994 and accepted the
Police Chief position in 1996 and served until February 2012. Matthew Van Der Linder served as police chief from September 2012 through June 2014. The police department from its beginning has had duel purposes, not only work in Law Enforcement but work in the city's water system and city maintenance and still
does today.  Daniel Yost became the City Police Officer in 2014 and retired from the Police Department in December 2017.

​Leola City currently contracts with the McPherson County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement.
