The American Legion is a nonprofit organization to help the veteran, his family and the community. The Auxiliary helps the Legion in such activities as the annual turkey raffle, Memorial Day program and district conventions. The Auxiliary sponsors a girl to Girl State and Journalism City when on is eligible. They also have a day of pillow cleaning every other year.
Records show that the first charter was granted to the Leola Chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary on March 25, 1922. No records of meetings or when they disbanded are to be found. The second charter was granted in December 1931. Mrs. Sam Hickman was the first Gold Star member, one of her sons were killed in France in World War I and the Legion was named after him, Roy S. Hickman post #78.
